sedation dentistry how it can help you reduce your dental fear

Fear of the dentist is more common than one may think. Over 75% of all dental patients experience some level of dental anxiety. Even with modern-day technology and practices, some people still face anxiety and stress when sitting in the dental chair.

At Valley Ridge Dental Centre, we value our patients’ safety and comfort and understand that the anxiety patients feel when they come to our office can be very real. Our team offers sedation dentistry in NW Calgary as a way to help our patients feel calm and relaxed during their dental procedures.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Dentists have used sedation dentistry for decades to help patients relax and get the dental treatments they require. Often, patients, who experience dental anxiety neglect any symptoms of oral pain or discomfort they may feel out of a fear of going to the dental office. This can lead to more severe dental issues down the road and even contribute to a decline in your overall health. Opting for sedation dentistry is a great solution to easing your fear and getting the treatment you need.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

If you are an individual who suffers from dental anxiety, you can reap numerous benefits from sedation dentistry, such as:

Eliminating Dental Anxiety

Sedation dentistry works to immediately help patients relax and have the dental work they need completed quickly and safely. Once you have tried sedation dentistry, you will feel more confident about your dental visits knowing that you will feel relaxed and comfortable.

Encourages Routine Dental Check-Ups

If you feel less anxious about going to the dentist, you can maintain your oral hygiene by visiting a dental office in NW Calgary for routine check-ups and cleanings. These appointments can also help you avoid more serious procedures later down the road that require more extensive costs and treatments.

Allows for the Completion of Complex Dental Procedures in One Visit

If you are a more anxious individual when visiting the dentist, you may not be able to stand sitting in the dental chair for extended periods, leading to the need for multiple dental visits. With sedation dentistry, you will feel completely relaxed and have your dental issues addressed within one appointment!

Safer Than General Anesthesia

Since sedation dentistry doesn’t put you to sleep, there isn’t any risk of the potential complications that come with general anesthesia. When you opt for sedation dentistry, you will still be conscious but in a deeply relaxed state.

Types of Sedation

There are typically three main types of sedation used by sedation dentists near you. The first type is commonly known as “laughing gas” or nitrous oxide, which is inhaled through your nose to put you in a relaxed state. Your dentist may also administer intravenous (IV) sedation, which is injected into the bloodstream using a small needle inserted into your vein. The final type of sedation that may be offered to you is oral sedation. In this case, you will be given a pill to take one hour before your dental procedure.
