Who Qualifies for Invisalign?
Invisalign in NW Calgary is popular among many age groups. In the past, adults usually asked for it because they associated conventional braces with teenagers. Now, even though metallic braces work excellently and young patients undergo orthodontic treatment with them, patients young and old are looking for Invisalign more and more every day.
An orthodontic dentist near you will evaluate your needs and determine if Invisalign can address them.
Invisalign works for crooked and gapped teeth and bite issues such as underbites and overbites; nevertheless, there are a few problems that it doesn’t correct, such as extremely rotated teeth or a gap that is too large. In these cases, you will need conventional braces.
How Does It Work?
Invisalign consists of aligning trays customized to your teeth. A patient wears them for two weeks and changes the sets until the teeth are in their correct position. Since the aligners are transparent plastic, they are nearly invisible (hence the name Invisalign).
Every time you change sets (every couple of weeks), you will feel some discomfort in the first few days because the aligners exert pressure to move your teeth.
Differences with Conventional Braces
1. The Price
If you are on a budget, we recommend opting for conventional braces because they are less expensive. Invisalign treatment may cost anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000. Not everyone can afford it, and it is one of the disadvantages of the system; however, our patients state that the investment is worth it because it is a comfortable, safe, and fast treatment. You may contact your insurance company to see if they offer any coverage for Invisalign, (although it is not usual) since it is a cosmetic dental procedure.
2. Invisalign is Removable
Unlike conventional braces, you can remove your aligners; nevertheless, do not remove them often. You should only take them out before meals and when preparing for your oral care routine since the treatment will only progress if you wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day.
If you lack the discipline to wear your aligning trays almost all day, maybe conventional orthodontics is a better option for you. Traditional brackets are cemented to the front of your teeth and join together with wire.
3. Aesthetics
Invisalign is a low-profile treatment. People won’t notice that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Conventional braces show, and people tend to feel self-conscious about their smiles.
4. Number of Orthodontic Checkups
At the beginning of the treatment, your dental professional will provide you with all sets of aligners. You will switch to a new one every two weeks and visit your orthodontist every six weeks to ensure the treatment is advancing correctly. But if you are a conventional braces wearer, you should schedule your orthodontic checkups every three to four weeks.
5. Comfort
Conventional braces have wires and brackets that may poke you when you expect it less, and it can be painful. Invisalign will not harm your soft tissues, and you will feel more comfortable and safe.
